Loan Sharks in Nigeria: How to Spot Them and Protect Yourself

When you need money urgently and have the option of taking a personal loan, the promise of quick cash can be difficult to ignore. However, some loan sharks in Nigeria may use this urgency to offer quick money with little documentation, no proper verification, and almost instant approval.

The consequences can go far beyond paying high interest. Some illegal lenders may use intimidation, harassment, threats, public shaming, or misuse of borrowers’ personal information to recover money.

What Is a Loan Shark?

A loan shark is an individual or lender that offers money under highly exploitative conditions, often operating outside the appropriate legal and regulatory framework.

Loan sharks typically target people who need money urgently and may not have many borrowing options. They may make the borrowing process appear extremely easy by promising instant approval, minimal documentation, or little to no assessment of the borrower’s ability to repay.

How to Spot Loan Sharks in Nigeria

Loan sharks can sometimes look like legitimate lenders, especially when they use professional-looking websites, social media pages or mobile applications.

Some warning signs to look out for include:

1. They Promise Money with Almost No Verification

A lender that promises to give you a large amount of money without properly verifying your identity, income, repayment ability or other relevant information should make you cautious.

Responsible lending involves understanding if a borrower can reasonably repay what they borrow.

Be particularly careful with messages such as: “No documents required.”, “No verification needed.”

An easy application process is not necessarily a problem. However, zero assessment and unrealistic promises should raise a red flag to you.

2. The Cost of Borrowing Is Unclear

Before accepting money, you should know exactly how much you are receiving, how much you are expected to repay, when repayment is due and what fees or charges apply.

Loan sharks may advertise an attractive amount without clearly explaining the total cost.

For example, an offer might focus on “Get ₦200,000 today” without making the repayment amount and applicable charges immediately clear.

If the lender cannot give you a clear answer before you accept the money, reconsider the offer.

3. They Use Extremely Short Repayment Periods

Another warning sign is an unusually short repayment period that makes it difficult for an average borrower to repay comfortably.

A lender may give you access to money quickly but expect repayment within a period that does not realistically match your income cycle.

A financial solution should not create another financial crisis a few days or weeks later.

4. They Add Unexpected Fees

Always be cautious when the amount you owe suddenly increases because of charges you were not clearly told about before accepting the money.

Unexpected processing fees, penalties or other charges can make an initially attractive offer significantly more expensive.

5. They Ask for Excessive Access to Your Personal Information

Your personal information is valuable, and you should be careful about the permissions you give a lending app.

Be cautious if an app requests unnecessary access to information such as your contacts, photos, videos, call logs or other sensitive information that is not reasonably required for the service.

Before installing a lending app, pay attention to the permissions it requests and the privacy information provided.

6. They Contact Your Friends, Family or Colleagues

One of the most disturbing practices associated with illegal digital lenders is contacting people in a borrower’s contact list to pressure them about repayment.

You may receive messages threatening to embarrass you, contact your employer or inform your friends and family about your debt.

7. They Use Threats or Public Shaming

A lender should not need to threaten, insult, humiliate or publicly shame you to recover money.

If a lender threatens to expose your personal information, publishes your details, sends abusive messages or intimidates you or people you know, you may be dealing with an illegal or unethical operator.

8. They Pressure You to Borrow Immediately

A lender should not need to convince you to take money before you have understood the terms. Be cautious of messages like: “Offer expires today.”, “Apply now before it is too late.”

Urgency can make people overlook important details. Take your time to read the terms, calculate the repayment and verify the lender before making a decision.

9. You Cannot Clearly Identify the Company Behind the Offer

Look for the company’s official name, contact information, physical presence where applicable, regulatory status and clear terms and conditions.

If the only way to communicate with the lender is through an anonymous WhatsApp number or social media account, be extremely cautious.

Reasons to Avoid Borrowing from Loan Sharks in Nigeria

  1. Loan sharks can charge costs that become difficult to manage.
  1. Borrowing from loan sharks can trap you in a cycle of debt.
  1. Loan sharks may misuse your personal information.
  1. You may face harassment and intimidation when you struggle to repay.
  1. Your personal and professional reputation could be put at risk.
  1. You may have limited protection if something goes wrong.

How to Protect Yourself from Loan Sharks in Nigeria

  • Verify the Lender

Don’t borrow simply because an advert appears on your social media feed or because someone sends you a link. Check the lender’s identity and regulatory status.

The CBN provides information on registered and approved financial institutions on its website.

  • Read the Terms Before Accepting Money

Don’t focus only on how much you will receive. If anything is unclear, ask questions before accepting the money.

  • Calculate the Repayment

Before borrowing, compare the repayment with your expected income.

For example, if you know you will receive your salary at the end of the month, consider if the repayment date and amount are realistic.

  • Be Careful with App Permissions

You should understand why an app needs access to particular information and if you are comfortable with how your data will be handled.

  • Don’t Download Unknown Lending Apps

Avoid downloading lending applications from random links, APK websites or messages from unknown people.

  • Don’t Let Urgency Make the Decision for You

If you need money urgently, it can be tempting to accept the first offer you see. Instead, pause and compare your options.

When you urgently need money, the fastest offer is not necessarily the safest one.

Before borrowing from any lender in Nigeria, take time to verify the lender, understand the repayment terms, calculate the total cost and check how your personal information will be handled.
